Our inner lobby recognizes supporters whose financial contributions helped make UF Health Proton Therapy Institute a reality.
Proton therapy is delivered while you lie on the treatment table. A gantry rotates to deliver therapy precisely to the tumor site.
Customized molds and other devices that help position you during treatment are made on-site in our machine shop.
The protons travel through the beam line, guided by electromagnets, into one of four treatment rooms.
UF Health Proton Therapy Institute is affiliated with the University of Florida and the UF Health Cancer Center. It is a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization for proton therapy and cancer research. All physicians and physicists are faculty members of UF.
The UF Health Proton Therapy Institute is located at 2015 N. Jefferson Street, on the campus of UF Health Jacksonville.
Backroom operations are monitored from the control room.
There are three proton therapy treatment rooms along the corridor directly in front of the nurses’ station.
For your comfort, each proton therapy treatment room has private changing rooms and bathrooms.
In addition to proton therapy, UF Health Proton Therapy Institute can provide conventional X-ray therapy to treat cancer.
The gantry rotates 360 degrees enabling the treatment nozzle to be positioned at the optimal treatment angle for each patient.
UF Health Proton Therapy Institute is approximately 98,000 square feet and houses both conventional radiation therapy and proton therapy.
Upon completion of treatment at UF Health Proton Therapy Institute, all patients are invited to ring Aud’s Chime as a sign of celebration and hope. The six-foot chime was dedicated in 2013 by Audrey Anderson, a young girl from Australia who was treated in 2012.
Use the staircase or elevator to access the building’s second level where weekly luncheons for patients and caregivers are hosted.
Through a process called electrolysis, protons are taken from water and injected into the cyclotron (cylindrical structure at center), which accelerates protons to nearly the speed of light. The protons are guided through the beam line at right.
Your simulation process may include CT PET imaging to help pinpoint the location, size and shape of your tumor.
Some treatment plans include the use of a body mold. Your customized body mold may look similar to this sample.
Pediatric patients can enjoy our playroom before treatment.

A red laser light and low energy X-rays are used to position the patient for daily therapy. Proton beams cannot be heard, seen or felt during treatment.
Our light-filled lobby is designed to make you and your family comfortable. It features living room seating, a separate reading room and Internet access.
