[chimes ringing, cheers and applause] It was a chance meeting at a family dinner that changed Kelly Jones' life.

I want to talk to you about. the proton therapy.

The Jacksonville native who now lives in Gainesville was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2012.

It was a self-exam. I felt a nodule at one point and went to the doctor and then they started from there. It happened very quickly.

They had results within 24 hours. Everything happened so fast and she wanted to be aggressive with treatment. So she had a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy. And it was during that treatment that Kelly was introduced to the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute. during a weekend away with her parents in Steenhatchee.

It happens that Dr. Nancy Mendenhall was part of that group having dinner and they know my family and so we just started talking and it was kind of mentioned that I was in the middle of my treatment and then she was like why don't you come back to our condo because they were spending I think the weekend there. I want to talk to you about the proton therapy because we're just starting a trial for breast cancer. So we talked, went back, talked about it and said, please come to Jacksonville because we have to make sure that you're a candidate for it. So we set up that appointment. I qualified for the trial at that time.

The proton therapy was targeted without impacts to her heart and lungs, and she wanted to keep life as normal as possible during the treatment, which meant daily drives from Jacksonville to Gainesville.

It's amazing. Once they have all the calculations and everything done, the treatment time is very quick.

And at the end of treatment, again 2012, she admits feeling sad because she was with her team every day. At that time, the huge Aud’s Chimes weren't yet in the lobby.

And later, I was very lucky to be chosen to be part of the UF Proton commercial that they did in 2015. I took that opportunity to be part of that commercial. [chimes ringing]  It wasn't loud. It was like a soft, just pleasant sound or chime. I guess a positive sound.

Kelly just celebrated her 14th anniversary cancer free.
