Mark J. Zakhary, PhD

Physicist

Dr. Mark J. Zakhary is Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology, with the University of Florida College of Medicine and a physicist at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute. As a board certified therapeutic medical physicist, his clinical and research interests lie in the areas of proton therapy treatment planning, clinical implementation of technology, efficient workflow development and standardization of practice. He also has a passion for education and was the 2022-2023 Dr. Karl Prado Educator of the Year, in recognition of excellence in teaching and enthusiastic support of residency training at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Zakhary’s research focuses on the areas of proton therapy treatment planning, clinical implementation of technology, efficient workflow development and standardization of practice. Dr. Zakhary is a member of an international research team investigating the cause of unexpected toxicities resulting from proton therapy.

What does your work at UF Health Proton Therapy Institute mean to you?

I am honored to be a member of the distinguished care team here at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute. I’m grateful for the opportunity to apply my experience in proton therapy to serve the many patients treated here. Being a father of young children, it is a particular privilege to support the care of pediatric patients. Being an employee here means I have the responsibility to serve our patients to the best of my ability through clinical work, research and teaching.
