Phil Ray's first experience at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute happened after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in spring of 2022.
Speaker Phil Ray:
One of the better decisions I ever made.
Speaker Rich Jones:
Treatment was five days a week.
Speaker Phil Ray:
What I liked about it was I was included in almost all of the recommendations and decision-making. I never felt left out. And they even give you a 24-hour number in the event you feel uncomfortable about something.
Speaker Rich Jones:
When his treatment ended, he says it was a huge relief. And then it came time to ring Aud’s Chime. [chime ringing]
Speaker Phil Ray:
I did sort of softly. [laughs] But my wife was there and she said, and you know, I don't know, there were a lot of people hanging around and I wasn't. [laughs] I wasn't real sure what to do, but she kind of led me over there and said, “Ring this thing now.” [laughs]
Speaker Rich Jones:
Just about a year after that special experience, Ray was in for a routine visit at the dermatologist. They found something troubling near his jaw. It was cancer. This time he needed surgery followed by radiation treatment.
Speaker Phil Ray:
I managed to get back into the program again. It was a good fit.
Speaker Rich Jones:
He had an important date coming in September 2023, the Ryder Cup in Italy. His seven-week program ended that August.
Speaker Phil Ray:
I jumped on a plane after concluding my second round and flew to Europe round-trip and managed to walk the golf course and it was fine.
Speaker Rich Jones:
But before that trip, he had a second chance at ringing Aud’s Chime. [chime ringing]
Speaker Phil Ray:
Probably a little louder. [laughs] I was a little more comfortable, and, actually, there was someone there who had rung the chime before me. I quickly rose up and we both got a very handsome welcome and a nice round of applause.
Speaker Rich Jones:
