In 2017, UFHPTI Medical Physics Residency Program has applied for initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP). Our program is now fully accredited through December 31, 2023, and currently is in the process of regular re-accreditation.

Please note that the CAMPEP accreditation status can be applied to the non-proton therapy curriculum only. 

As stated in the official letter from CAMPEP, this is a result of the lack of CAMPEP standards for a proton physics residency. Non-proton therapy curriculum is emphasized through the first two years of the Residency, while proton therapy medical physics training is done primarily during the third year of the Residency.

Our History

The Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program at the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute (UFHPTI) was a part of a two-year Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program at University of Florida in Gainesville. The latter was established in July 1995, initially accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP) in 2000 and re-accredited multiple times since initial accreditation. As of January 2016, the total number of graduates of UF Gainesville program was twenty-five. Nine of these graduates were educated primarily on UFHPTI (Jacksonville) campus.

The UFHPTI campus was established in 2006 followed by the opening of UFHPTI as a training site of the UF Radiation Oncology Physics Residency program. As a healthcare institution, UFHPTI is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) since 2015. Also, UFHPTI is one of the four cancer centers in Florida that are designated Cancer Centers of Excellence. In addition, UFHPTI carries a prestigious NCI designation as an integral part of UF Health Cancer Center. All the UFHPTI graduates have gone on to positions in radiation oncology physics at reputable institutions. Starting November 2017, UFHPTI continues the residency program independently from the UF Gainesville campus with collaboration between two programs. The duration of the UFHPTI Clinical Medical Physics Residency is designed to provide all CAMPEP-required clinical training in radiation therapy physics, with an additional emphasis in proton therapy. We offer 2 or 3 years of training depending on the previous proton therapy experience of the successful candidate accepted into the Program. The experience of each candidate is evaluated during the admissions process.
