Executive Team
Nancy Price Mendenhall, MD
Medical Director
A University of Florida College of Medicine faculty member since 1985, Dr. Mendenhall served as the chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology from 1993-2006. She has more than 20 years of experience and specializes in the areas of breast cancer, Hodgkin's disease, lymphomas and pediatric cancers. She also treats patients who have prostate cancer and other malignancies. Dr. Mendenhall is a leader in research, has extensive experience in cooperative group trials (COG) and has produced more than 137 published works, including articles in such publications as American Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. In addition, she has been named in several leading women's magazines as one of the nation's top doctors for women with cancer. Currently, Dr. Mendenhall is responsible for the day-to-day clinical operations of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute.
Stuart Klein, MHA
Executive Director
Mr. Klein is responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. He has more than 20 years of experience as a health services administrator specializing in radiation oncology and finance for large university medical facilities. Author of the financial section of OncoLink, an internationally recognized oncology Web site, Klein is Assistant Dean & Lecturer at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
Zuofeng Li, DSc
Associate Professor
Dr. Li is responsible for the day-to-day technical operations of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. He has more than 10 years of experience, specializing in radiation physics, brachytherapy, image-based brachytherapy, and combined IMRT and brachytherapy delivery. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.
Jatinder Palta, PhD
As Chief Physicist at the University of Florida Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Palta played a pivotal role in the development of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. He joined the UF College of Medicine faculty in 1993 and has served as chief of physics since then. With more than 24 years of experience in medical physics, he specializes in clinical radiation physics, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and is the designer of a copyrighted non-docking intraoperative electron beam applicator system (1989). Dr. Palta also established the Resource Center for Emerging Technologies (RCET) in 1998.
Physicians
Randal Henderson, MD, MBA
Associate Medical Director
Dr. Henderson is a Professor at the University of Florida's Department of Radiation Oncology and has served as the Medical Director for the University of Florida-Jacksonville Department of Radiation Oncology since 1998. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology, the Southern Association of Oncology, the Florida Division of the American Cancer Society and is a member of the Florida Cancer Council. Dr. Henderson specializes in the areas of gynecologic malignances and cancers of the lung, prostate and head and neck. His work has appeared in a number of scholastic publications.
Daniel J. Indelicato, MD
Dr. Indelicato joined the UF Proton Therapy Institute in 2008 and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UF. His specialties include soft tissue sarcomas, cancer in children, and breast cancer. Dr. Indelicato completed his residency training at University of Florida, which included significant elective time at the UF Proton Therapy Institute and St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis. Prior to his specialty training in radiation oncology, he completed an internship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. An established cancer researcher, his work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed medical journals, including the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, Medical Physics and Surgery,and he has been invited to present his findings at various national and international medical conferences.
Sameer Keole, MD
A University of Florida faculty member since January 2005, Dr. Keole's specialties include pediatric cancers and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. He treats prostate cancer patients as well. His medical experience includes positions at Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University School of Medicine, with research appearing in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics. Dr. Keole currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology.
Robert Malyapa, MD, PhD
A Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Florida's Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Malyapa's specialties include brachytherapy and the treatment of cancers of the central nervous system, head and neck, hepatobiliary cancers and colorectal cancer. Before coming to the University of Florida, Dr. Malyapa served as a radiation oncologist at the University of Pittsburg, and as an assistant professor of radiation oncology at Washington University in St. Louis. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, Radiation Research and more. Dr. Malyapa joined the University of Florida in 2005.
Robert B. Marcus, Jr., MD
Specializing in pediatric radiation oncology, Dr. Marcus brings more than 30 years of experience to his patients. In addition to pediatric cancers, he is known for his expertise in Ewing's sarcoma, soft tissue sarcoma, bone and soft tissue malignancies and central nervous system tumors. With more than 100 works published, Dr. Marcus is a contributor to medical journals including American Journal of Clinical Oncology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, and Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research. A leader in both the national and international medical communities, he is listed in noteworthy publications such as The Best Doctors in America and Who's Who in America. He has held leadership roles in radiation oncology associations including the Florida Society of Clinical Oncologists where he served as the organization's president. He also directed the radiation oncology committee for the Pediatric Oncology Group for eight years and the Children's Oncology Group for five years.
William M. Mendenhall, MD, FACR
With over 20 years of experience in radiation oncology, Dr. Mendenhall is recognized as an expert in head and neck cancer as well as central nervous system, gastrointestinal and other malignancies. He also treats prostate cancer patients. He is a frequent contributor to medical journals, with more than 500 published works including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Head and Neck, International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, and Cancer, and is regularly invited to speak at national and international oncology conferences. He is also recognized in publications such as The Best Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors. Currently, Dr. Mendenhall serves as Professor for the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida.
R. Charles Nichols, Jr., MD
A radiation oncologist for more than 15 years, Dr. Nichols specializes in treating cancers of the lung and prostate. Prior to joining UFPTI, he served as medical director of Bay Medical Regional Cancer Center, Panama City, Fla. Author or coauthor of more than 25 peer reviewed publications and meeting presentations, his work has appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics. A University of Florida Department of Radiation Oncology assistant professor since 2008, he serves as the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) Principal Investigator for both the Jacksonville and Gainesville campuses.
Felicia E. Snead, MD
Dr. Snead has been a University of Florida faculty member since 2003. Her specialties include gastrointestinal carcinoma, central nervous system neoplasms, cancers of the breast and lung, as well as sarcomas. Before joining the University of Florida as a Clinical Assistant Professor, Dr. Snead completed a residency in radiation oncology at N YPH/Columbia University in New York City. She is a co-coordinator of the breast oncology program at University of Florida Shands Jacksonville and is the Cancer Coalition chair of the Duval County Health Department's Healthy Jacksonville program.
Physicists
Stella Flampouri, PhD
A medical physicist at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, Dr. Flampouri provides patient treatment planning. She has been a University of Florida College of Medicine faculty member since February 2006. Her specialties include radiation physics, accurate dose calculation and treatment planning dose checking with simulations, IMRT and 4D CT planning.
Darren Kahler, PhD
A Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Florida's Department of Radiation Oncology and faculty member since 1999, Dr. Kahler specializes in clinical radiation physics, dose buildup measurements, quality assurance for 3D planning systems and 3D photon beam commissioning.
Roelf Slopsema, MS
As a University of Florida College of Medicine faculty member since 2005, Mr. Slopsema's specialties include proton beam therapy, quality assurance and field calibrations.
Daniel Yeung, PhD
An Associate Professor at the University of Florida's Department of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Yeung has more than 10 years' experience, with special interest in proton therapy, radiation physics, treatment planning, medical imaging applications and clinical software development.
Support Services
Gary Barlow
Administrative Technical Director
Mr. Barlow manages the radiation therapist staff, overseeing the patient treatment scheduling, daily treatments, and simulation operations. He has more than 25 years of experience in the field of radiation oncology, including senior or management level roles for more than 12 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology from the Medical University of South Carolina, is a Certified Radiologic Technologist and is a Registered Radiologic Technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Judy Taylor Holland
Manager Patient Intake Services
Mrs. Holland manages the patient intake staff and is responsible for developing standards of excellence in customer service, including responding to new patient inquiries and scheduling new patient consultations. She has more than 25 years of experience at Fortune 500 companies as a consumer affairs and customer service executive.
Judi Hensley
Patient Intake Coordinator
Ms. Hensley provides expert, timely information and service to potential patients who are interested in proton therapy. She coordinates the intake process for new and potential patients, including answering questions, arranging consultation appointments and working with labs and physicians' offices to gather clinical information.
Katie Mahoney, MSW
Patient Services Coordinator
Providing patients and caregivers with a comfortable environment, Ms. Mahoney is part of the team that facilitates group discussion, meetings and outings, ensures comfortable housing and provides information on recreation and entertainment opportunities. Her responsibilities include the pediatric program, head and neck program and wives and caregivers program.
Kathy McIntyre
Administrator of Billing Services
Ms. McIntyre is responsible for overseeing patient financial services, including timely and accurate billing, filing insurance claims and establishing payment arrangements for patients.
Gerry Troy, MSW
Administrator of Patient Services
Mr. Troy is responsible for developing and implementing the comprehensive patient services program at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute. Prior to joining the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute's staff, Mr. Troy developed and oversaw social support services for eight years at Loma Linda University Medical Center's proton facility. Mr. Troy is nationally and internationally known for pioneering the normative approach to support proton therapy patients.
