Lymphomas
Lymphomas are cancers of the lymph nodes. Since lymph nodes occur all over the body, lymphomas can occur in many sites as well. Lymphomas are usually treated well with chemotherapy and conventional radiation therapy, but with long follow-up in these highly curable diseases, many problems emerge with time related to radiation dose to normal tissues, including second malignancies, especially breast cancer, heart and lung disease. Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, particularly those involving the chest, may benefit from proton therapy because of significantly lower radiation doses to the lung, heart, breast, and total body than can be achieved with conventional radiation therapy techniques.
